What Is an XL American Bully? A Complete Breed Guide

November 12, 2024·6 min read·By Jeff & Brianna ”” Loyal Lions

If you've ever seen an XL American Bully walk into a room, you understand the draw. Broad-chested, muscular, with a face that somehow manages to look both imposing and endlessly kind ”” they stop traffic. But there's far more to this breed than its appearance.

Where the Breed Comes From

The American Bully was developed in the United States during the 1980s and 90s, primarily by crossing the American Pit Bull Terrier with the American Staffordshire Terrier and, in some lines, the English Bulldog. The goal wasn't to create a working dog ”” it was to engineer the ultimate companion: physically impressive, emotionally stable, and completely devoted to family.

The United Kennel Club (UKC) officially recognized the American Bully as a distinct breed in 2013. The American Bully Kennel Club (ABKC) was founded specifically to develop and protect the breed's standards across its four recognized sizes: Pocket, Standard, Classic, and XL.

The Four Size Classes

Pocket
Under 17" (males), under 16" (females)
Compact, same build, proportionally identical to XL
Standard
17"”“20" (males), 16"”“19" (females)
The foundation size class
Classic
Same as Standard
Lighter body mass, less exaggerated features
XL
20"”“23" (males), 19"”“22" (females)
The largest class ”” what we breed at Loyal Lions

Physical Characteristics

XL American Bullies are wide, low, and thick. Males typically weigh between 80”“150 lbs at a height of 20”“23 inches at the withers. Females run slightly smaller. The head is broad with pronounced cheeks, a short muzzle, and a well-defined stop ”” the signature "bully" look.

The coat is short, tight, and low-maintenance. They come in virtually every colour and pattern: tri-colour, merle, brindle, fawn, blue, chocolate, and more. At Loyal Lions, our dogs carry some of the most sought-after colour genetics in the game.

Temperament: The Real Story

Despite the intimidating appearance, the XL American Bully is one of the most human-oriented dog breeds in existence. They were specifically bred to be non-aggressive, biddable, and deeply affectionate. The ABKC breed standard explicitly requires a confident, stable, and gentle temperament.

XL Bullies are exceptional with children ”” patient, tolerant, and protective without aggression. They're social dogs that genuinely want to be wherever you are. They do not do well in isolation and thrive as true family members.

That said, their size and strength mean early socialization and basic obedience training are essential. A well-raised XL Bully with good structure and stable genetics is a joy to own. A poorly bred one with unstable temperament is a liability. This is exactly why choosing the right breeder matters so much.

Are They Right for You?

XL Bullies are best suited for families or individuals who want a loyal, low-drama companion that loves to cuddle and isn't looking for a high-drive working dog. They need moderate daily exercise ”” a couple of solid walks ”” but aren't marathon runners. They don't do well in extreme heat due to their shorter muzzles, so summer supervision is important.

If you're ready to invest in a well-bred, health-tested XL Bully from proven genetics, we'd love to talk. Our dogs come from working, champion-producing lines and leave here with full vet checks, health guarantees, and a lifetime of breeder support.
